Stack's Bowers February 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74696

This specimen was lot 74696 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1843-Pi PS. San Luis Potosí Mint. NGC MS-62. Flat Top "3" Variety. An attractive coin with dusty, original surfaces, sharp strike detail, and deep toning throughout." Assayers PS and AM arre noted for this date along with flat top 3 and round top 3 varieties. The 1843/2 overdate obtains a slight premium while the others are priced as common. Assayer PS is listed for 1842-43, 1849, 1857-61 and 1867-70. We don't know if it was the same person each time.
