Mexico 1842-Mo 1/8 real
The first specimen was lot 1896 in Classical Numismatic Group's auction of the Richard Lissner collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $363. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO, Primera República. 1823-1863. CU 1/8 Real. Ciudad de México (Mexico City) mint. Dated 1842 Mo. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 62 BN. Very nice moderate brown color. Only one graded higher in MS 63. Very nice this choice." The second specimen was lot 1958 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $446.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AE ¼ real, 1842-Mo, well struck with a bit of red, rare in this grade, PCGS graded MS62 BN, R." This issue, struck 1841-42 and 1850-51, was the last federal attempt to drive out the abusive minting of state and municipal coppers by being heavier and better made than its competitors. In this it failed. The state and local coppers would not be banished until the introduction of the copper centavo of 1869-97 (KM 391).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper, the first specimen Ø29 mm, 14.48 g, 6h axis.
Catalog reference: .KM-334, DB-1020.
