This specimen was lot 11258 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $411. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1841/0-GoPJ. Scarce date. Attractive toning. EXTREMELY FINE." Assayer PJ is recorded for 1834-42; four reales were struck at Guanajuato 1835-70. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. This particular date is very scarce.
