This specimen was lot 11267 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $822. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1840-ZsOM. RARE date. Areas of striking weakness at rims. Toned. VERY FINE." Assayer OM is recorded for 1830-55; four reales were struck at Zacatecas 1830-70. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. This particular date is rare.
