Mexico 1840-Mo ML 1/2 escudo
The first specimen was lot 23349 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Escudo, 1840-MoML. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-63. Lustrous with a touch of vivid orange toning on the high points. The finest graded example of the date at NGC." The second specimen was lot 532 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £140 (about US$217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "Republic, half-escudo, Mexico City mint, 1840 ML, good extremely fine." The Mexico City mint struck half escudos 1825-63 and 1868-69 and is the most common mint.
