This specimen was lot 1537 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AR ½ real, 1840-Mo, assayer ML, stunning bright mint state example with some parts of the fields bordering on prooflike, NGC graded MS66." This type was struck at the Mexico City mint 1825-63 and most dates, including this one, are common. Overdates abound but none are reported for 1840.
