Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70796

This specimen was lot 70796 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1840-Pi JS. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU Details--Obverse Graffiti. With the exception of a thin carved 'A' between the rays, the surfaces actually border upon Mint State quality." This eight reales is one of a series struck 1827-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. This date is rather common. Assayer JS is listed for 1828-42.
