Mexico 1839-Pi JS 8 reales

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71263

This specimen was lot 71263 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1839-Pi JS. Potosi Mint. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A well struck 8 Reales of San Luis Potosí. Gunmetal gray toning and with even wear. A better early date." This eight reales is one of a series struck 1827-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. This date is rather common. Assayer JS is recorded for 1827-42.
