Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73125
SB224-73125r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73125 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1840-Ca RG. Chihuahua Mint. PCGS VF-35. Die style of 1840. From a VERY RARE date, this excellent crown offers crisp detail throughout and wholesome, light gray surface tone. A small strike through error is seen on the reverse but the coin is free of damage or cleaning. Ex: Richard Long." The Chihuahua mint was opened in 1811 by the royalists during the War of Independence and operated until 1822. It seems to have closed until 1831, when it resumed striking eight reales of republican design. Output must have been small as most of the dates before the 1870's are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895. Assayer RG is noted for 1839-57.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.2; DP-Ca11.
