This specimen was lot 1278 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,610. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1841 Mo ML. Mexico City. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A scarce date and this one is a high-grade example for this issue. There is faint graffiti in right obverse field in the form of intersecting hairlines. Still reflective with a touch of orange-gold in the lettering and a minor planchet flake missing from below the law book. Extremely Fine." The Mexico City mint struck eight escudos 1824-69 and is one of the abundant mints for that denomination; most dates are common.
