close up of the date

The first specimen was lot 3281 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1841/34 RM 8 escudos. Durango mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous orange gold with strong lustre, faint vertical scratches near the assayer's mark on the obverse, other well-hidden scratches beneath the wreath from 6:00 to 8:00 on the reverse, some spotting, heavy horizontal die crack from left reverse rim. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

While Durango mint eight escudos are not rare, the SCWC gives this overdate about 50% premium over the normal date. Uncirculated eight escudos of Durango are not common compared to those of Mexico City.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW; the Eliasberg specimen: 27.06 grams, 37.10 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 383.3, Fr-68, Calico Onza-1862.
