This specimen was lot 21190 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1841/31-GaMC. NGC AU Details--Reverse Graffiti. EXTREMELY RARE date, this cataloger knows of only one other example. Richard Long notes, "We know of two examples, a F and a VF." The "Reverse Graffiti" is an "X" lightly scratched in the field above the eagle's wing. The 4/3 overdate is bold. Good strike, lustrous and attractive." Guadalajara struck gold for Mexico throughout the years of the Republic but concentrated its production on two escudos. Eight escudos were emitted 1825-66; no date is common but the 1841 JG is rare.
