Mexico 1888-Zs Z 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71459

This specimen was lot 71459 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1888-Z_ Z. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU-55. Error with missing "s" in mintmark. Only example in NGC Census. Rare error. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." This date marks the second in a series of “Z Z” errors, where the “s” was omitted from the mintmark. Similar errors are known for 1886, 1890, 1896 and 1897. The regular date is common, this error is somewhat scarce. The Zacatecas mint was one of four mints that struck the ten centavos with the redesigned eagle, starting in 1898.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge.
