Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 640

This specimen was lot 640 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £6,000 (about US$9,293 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 2½ pesos, Hermosillo mint, 1888 G, very fine to good very fine, very rare. Ex Pradeau Collection." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-92 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas but the other mints (Alamos, Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is one of two dates from Hermosillo, the other being 1874.
