Shown is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Hermosillo is so rare that until recently it was listed as a counterfeit. This specimen was lot 9193 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $6,900. The catalog description^[1] noted, “MEXICO. Hermosillo. 50 Centavos, 1888-HoG. Extremely RARE Hermosillo 50 Centavos. EXTREMELY RARE date and probably the finest known. Cleaned and retoned, hairlines, sharply struck, attractive. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.”

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
