Shown is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Culiacan is so rare that for many years it was listed in the SCWC as a counterfeit. This specimen was lot 9161 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description^[1] noted, “MEXICO. Culiacan. 50 Centavos, 1888-CnM. Probably Unique 1888 Culiacan 50 Centavos, EXTREMELY RARE and the only example that we know of. Probably UNIQUE. Cleaned, one small scratch, several small edge bumps. VERY FINE.”

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
