Shown is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Mexico City is so rare it was long listed as a counterfeit. This specimen was lot 9215 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $8,912.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, “MEXICO. Mexico City. 50 Centavos, 1888-MoM. Probably Unique 1888 Mexico City 50 Centavos. EXTREMELY RARE date and the only example that we know of, probably UNIQUE. One small edge nick, nice strike, lustrous and very attractive. EXTREMELY FINE.”

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
