This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1870-90 at the Guanajuato mint, which closed in 1900. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. This date is common but scarce in nice condition. The second specimen was lot 2302 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 25 Centavos, 1888-Go R NGC MS64. Balance scale. The highest grade in the NGC census. NGC graded MS-64."

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 312,000.
