Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 36316
SB822-36316r.jpg

Shown is an 1888MoM five pesos gold piece, of a type struck at Mexico City 1870-1905. The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Chihuahua, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. Despite the miniscule mintage, the 1888MoM is considered only a slightly scarce date. The second specimen was lot 36316 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1888-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. PCGS Genuine--Plugged, AU Details."

Recorded mintage: 250.

Specification: 8.46 g, 0.875 fine gold, 0.238 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-139; KM-412.6.
