This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1874-90 at the Guanajuato mint, which closed in 1900. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. The second specimen was lot 9093 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 25 Centavos, 1889/8-GoR. Blast white. NGC MS-67." The third specimen was lot 9094 in the same sale, where it sold for $431.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 25 Centavos, 1889-GoR/AsL. NGC MS-65."

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 304,000.
