Shown is an 1889MoM balance scale twenty pesos, of a type struck 1870-1905. This issue from Mexico City is among the more available dates. Other mints include Hermosillo, Culiacan, Durango, Zacatecas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato and Alamos. This specimen was lot 514 in Stack’s Coin Galleries sale (New York, December 2005), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description noted, "Republic. 20 Pesos, 1889 Mo M. Mexico City. Eagle standing on cactus, serpent in beak. Rv. Radiant cap above balance scales. 6,477 pieces were struck, though many have met the sleep of ages. Attractive rich whiskey-gold. Some very minor surface tics. Brilliant Uncirculated. NGC MS62. Especially Rare in this grade. Provenance: Ex Louis E. Eliasberg Collection, ex John H. Clapp Collection."
