This specimen was lot 21229 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Pesos, 1889-AsL. NGC MS-63. Mintage of only 5,615 pieces. Second finest certified of the date at NGC with only one finer (MS64). A choice specimen from a seldom seen mint for gold. Though not as rare as its short lived 20 Pesos counterpart still SCARCE in its own right especially so in this state of preservation. Highly lustrous with flashy surfaces and frosted devices. A lovely example sure to excite the connoisseur of Mexican and World gold collectors alike." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Alamos mint 1874-95. Although production was substantial (the 5,615 pieces for 1889 is the highest mintage for the type), Alamos remains a rare mint, priced about double Mexico City, Culiacan or Zacatecas. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.
