Mexico 1889-Ho FG 8 reales

Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70591

This specimen was lot 70591 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1889-Ho FG. Hermosillo Mint. NGC MS-62. Tied for third finest certified of the date with one other example on either the NGC or PCGS population reports, only three finer (NGC MS 63[2] & PCGS MS 64). This nicely preserved and attractive example displays light gray patina with lovely iridescent sun set hues that pop out when rotated in the light. The devices are bold, frosty and well-formed with plenty remaining luster." The Hermosillo mint struck eight reales 1861-95. Many of the early dates are very rare but most issues after 1874, including this one, are common.

Recorded mintage: 490,000.
