This specimen was lot 40377 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $10,370. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2-1/2 Pesos, 1889-Zs/Mo Z. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-64. Rare dare. Finest and only Mint State of just three examples graded by NGC. Seldom offered, the rarity is reflected by the small mintage. From the Kirk Menczer Collection." Zacatecas struck this denomination 1872-78 and 1888-90; only the 1872-ZS and 1873-ZS appear with any frequency. The type is recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. This date is known only with the repunched mintmark. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.
