Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72043

This specimen was lot 72043 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description^[1] noted, "One of Only 500 Pieces Struck! MEXICO. Gold Peso, 1889-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-62. A RARE issue, this date has the lowest recorded mintage of this type. Impressively preserved as well, it showcases powerful gloss in the fields with pinpoint sharpness through the designs. Given its elusiveness and attractiveness, a coin that is certain to attract spirited interest." The Mexico City mint struck this type 1870-1905 and was by far the largest producer. The SCWC awards this date a modest premium but many rare dates are not noted as such therein.
