This specimen was lot 25323 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1890Ho-FG, MS65 NGC, rich blue-green and russet patina, a highly attractive coin." We hasten to assure collectors contemplating this series that this date from the Hermosillo City mint normally sells for a fraction of the price realized above. The Hermosillo mint issued this type 1835-39 and 1861-97 and most dates after 1872 are readily available.

Recorded mintage: 565,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
