This specimen was lot 72255 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1890-Ga S. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just one specimen, this gorgeous minor presents a rather deep tone highlighted by hints of burgundy and cobalt throughout." This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1871-77, 1881-97 at the Guadalajara mint. Assayer S operated 1886-95. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 during the War of Independence and closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango and Hermosillo.
