Tlaxcala 1890 2 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, part of lot 72745

In 1890, the German firm of L. Chr. Lauer of Nurnberg issued a series of patterns for Mexico in copper and copper-nickel. Twenty-one designs were struck, all with a common obverse with different reverses for the various states (including Tlaxcala, shown here) and one commemorating the eightieth anniversary of independence in 1890. There is no indication that the regime of Porfirio Diaz showed any interest in adopting them so these fall into the class of tokens struck as salesmen's samples. However, they are not rare and they are popular enough to be listed in some editions of the SCWC. This specimen was part of lot 72745 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), which sold for $3,525. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Complete 10 piece Set of Pattern 2 Centavos Struck in Bronze, 1890. Bruce-NC12/21. Campeche, Coahuila, Estado de Mexico, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, Quer[e]taro, San Luis Potosi, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, and Independencia. Very seldom does a complete set appear on the market. NGC-MS62 (2), MS-64 (5), & MS-65 (3)."
