Mexico 1890-Go R 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72732

This specimen is a fairly common date of a series struck 1871-96 at the Chihuahua mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 72732 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $129.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1890-GoR. NGC MS-66. Sharply struck with highly attractive iridescent toning. Great eye appeal." A variety, G^O R/C^N M, is listed for this date.

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
