This specimen was lot 73137 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $610. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1868-Mo CH. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-63. Tied with three others for highest graded by NGC. Colorful medium dark tone. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The Mexico City mint struck two reales 1827, 1850-56, 1859-63 and 1867-68. Many early dates are rare. Assayer CH, who shared 1868 with assayer PH, is recorded for 1861-69. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861-MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.
