Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 368

This specimen was lot 368 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £1,300 (about US$2,014 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 4 reales, Mexico City mint, 1868 PH, mint state and well toned, rare thus." This denomination was never hoarded like the eight reales and uncirculated examples are very scarce to rare. Mexico City is not a rare mint for four reales but is less common than Guanajuato or Zacatecas. For 1868, assayers CH and PH are both better but not rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, 0.3925 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 375.6.
