The first specimen is one of a series struck 1858-93 at the Oaxaca mint. The second specimen was lot 6422 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $431.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. 8 Reales, 1868-AE. Round top "6" in date. NGC MS-61." This date is scarce compared to the later issues of the 1880's and 1890's but is not rare. The early dates of this mint, 1858-62, are marked by small issues and numerous varieties, suggesting difficulties in getting organized, after which the mint became a steady tho not prolific producer. Assayer AE is recorded for 1863-90. Unlike other mints, adjustment marks are normal on Oaxaca issues.
