This specimen is from a series struck 1867-68 at the Mexico City mint. Its extreme similarity to the half real led to its rejection. This "cap and rays" five centavos piece was superseded by the "standing eagle" type struck 1869-97. It, in turn, was replaced by a "slim eagle" five centavos piece (KM 400) in 1898.
Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Catalog reference: KM 397.
