The first specimen was lot 1403 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $573.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1867-Mo. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. With typical soft definition and die rust for this issue but strong attractive luster." This specimen is from a series struck 1867-68 at the Mexico City mint. Its extreme similarity to the half real led to its rejection. This "cap and rays" five centavos piece was superseded by the "standing eagle" type struck 1869-97. It, in turn, was replaced by a "slim eagle" five centavos piece (KM 400) in 1898.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 397.
