This specimen was lot 30339 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Caps and Rays 8 Reales 1867 Pi-LR AU58 PCGS, San Luis Potosí mint, Borderline Mint State with slight friction evidence on the higher points. A well struck and attractive coin, with considerable subdued mint lustre and very clean surfaces. A highly elusive date, very rare in this fine preservation and undoubtedly among the finest known (DP notes 'perhaps a half dozen of Extremely Fine to Uncirculated examples exist', this example being referred to as one of the latter)." The specimen shown is an 1867Pi-PS eight reales from the San Luis Potosí mint, which struck the type 1827-93. The San Luis Potosí mint closed in 1895, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold. The SCWC lists three assayers (CA, LR and PS) and an overassayer PS/CA. All are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .785 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 377.12, DP-Pi53.
