Mexico 1867C 8 escudos rev H3029-30876.jpg

The Culiacan mint struck eight escudos 1846-70 and most dates are reasonably available but are seldom seen in this quality. This specimen was lot 30876 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1867 C-CB, Culiacan mint AU Details (Light Surface Hairlines) NGC. This coin has retoned quite nicely. A scarce issue of Culiacan with a "C.B." assayer." The CB assayer is an error, caused by a die break, so we have filed it under the regular "CE" assayer.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-66, KM 383.2.
