Mexico 1867-Pi CA 8 reales

from the Stack's Bowers 2019 NYINC sale, lot 41214

The specimen shown is an 1867Pi-CA eight reales from the San Luis Potosí mint, which struck the type 1827-93. The San Luis Potosí mint closed in 1893, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold. The SCWC lists assayers CA (shown here), LR and PS for this date; only PS is common. This specimen was lot 41214 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1867-Pi CA. San Luis Potosí Mint. NGC MS-62. Classified as "Very Rare" in Resplandores with the additional comment that "perhaps three or four choice specimens exist in the Extremely Fine to Uncirculated area." This example would certainly fall into the "choice specimen" classification, with vibrant satiny luster in the fields and a strike that falls just short of complete. A few slight handling marks are observed around the Cap and Rays motif, but these fall well within the confines of the assigned grade. Easily the finest we've seen and considering its unsurpassed certified grade, a coin that is very much in consideration for the finest known of the issue."
