Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70511

This specimen was lot 70511 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1867-Mo CH. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-58. A lustrous piece with delightful dove gray tone resting across the surfaces and bright flashes emanating from the fields. An above average strike provides almost full definition to the cap and eagle's feathers while legends are razor sharp. With only three coins certified finer in the NGC census, this Premium About Uncirculated example would be an excellent acquisition for series specialists. From the Alfonso Sito Garcia collection. EX: Jesus Cacho collection." The Mexico City mint struck two reales of this design 1825-37, 1840-42, 1847-63, 1867-68. Most of the mints focused on producing eight reales for export and neglected this useful and popular denomination. As a result, few dates other than the 1861-M^OCH are available in high grade.
