This specimen was lot 73187 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,952. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1867-Zs JS. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-63. Two year assayer. Finest and only Mint State of just three graded by NGC. Bright luster with nice light steel-blue toning. Rare condition. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The Zacatecas mint struck two reales 1827, 1850-56, 1859-63 and 1867-68. Assayer JS (J. S. de Santa Ana) is recorded for 1867-68 and 1876-86. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861-MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.
