This specimen was lot 72074 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1863-Zs VL. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS MS-61. A decently lustrous coin, with a slight strike weakness on the centers. The fields have a vaguely prooflike flash and a dash of light toning." Other mints include Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Alamos, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Mexico City, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this denomination. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.76 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 374.12.
