Mexico 1863-Mo CH 1/2 real

from Stack's Bowers June 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72082

This specimen was lot 72082 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1863-Mo CH. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-63. A moderately struck but highly lustrous little coin, with speckled toning, and overall good eye appeal." The half real was popular among the people for making small transactions but most of the Mexican mints regarded making them a nuisance in the way of striking eight reales. Only Mexico City, Guanajuato and Zacatecas took seriously government decrees to issue small change. This type was struck at Mexico City 1825-63 and most dates are common, including this one. Assayer CH is recorded for 1861-63.
