Mexico 1863-Mo centavo

Ponterio sale 169, lot 11321

from the San Dimas Collection

The first specimen was lot 11321 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mexico City. Centavo, 1863-Mo. NGC MS-63 RB. Flat-top "3". Reeded edge. Sharply struck." The type is not rare in low grade but is very scarce in nice condition. The obverse legend, "LIBERTAD Y REFORMA," was the battle-cry of the Liberals in their war on the Conservatives and church privilege. When the Republic resumed striking centavos in 1869, an entirely different design was used. The Mexico City mint struck the redesigned centavos 1868-81 and 1885-97. Flat-top and round-top "3's" exist in the date.
