Mexico 1863-SLP centavo

Ponterio sale 169, lot 11324

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen was lot 11324 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. San Luis Potosí. Centavo, 1863-SLP. NGC MS-63 BN. Sharply struck." This specimen is a one year type struck at San Luis Potosí. The type is not rare in low grade but is very scarce in nice condition. The obverse legend, "LIBERTAD Y REFORMA," was the battle-cry of the Liberals in their war on the Conservatives and church privilege. When the Republic resumed striking centavos in 1869, an entirely different design was used. The San Luis Potosí mint struck the redesigned centavos 1877-78 and 1891.

Recorded mintage: 1,025,000.

Specification: copper, 26.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
