Mexico 1863-Zs VL 4 reales

This specimen was lot 71521 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1863-Zs VL. Zacatecas Mint. NGC EF-45. Struck during the same year French forces fought the Mexican Republic for the second time at Puebla and subsequently captured Mexico City. A pleasing and consistent violet gray color can be witnessed across the surfaces of this lightly circulated piece. Substantial mint luster still remains, especially around the rims." Shown is an 1863Zs-VL four reales, a late date of a type struck at the Zacatecas mint 1830-70. Assayer VL is recorded for 1859-64. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Guanajuato is tied with Zacatecas as the commonest mint. This date is common but, like all four reales, rare in choice condition.
