This specimen was lot 71514 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1862/1-Go YE. Guanajuato Mint. PCGS AU-50. Overdate variety. A charming and original example with even, steely gray toning throughout." Shown is an 1862/1-Go YE four reales, from a type struck at the Guanajuato mint 1835-70. Assayer YE is recorded for 1862 only. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Guanajuato is tied with Zacatecas as the commonest mint. This date is common but, like all four reales, rare in choice condition.
