The first specimen was lot 950 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, December 2009), where it sold for $201.25. The catalog description noted, "Mexico. Republic. 8 Reales, 1862 O FR. Oaxaca. Eagle on cactus. Rv. Cap in rays, Resplandor. A wealth of marvelous frosty silver lustre. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated." The second specimen was lot 21486 in Heritage sale 3006 (Long Beach, September 2009), where it sold for $575. The catalog description noted, "Republic Cap and Rays 8 Reales 1862 O-FR, MS65 NGC. Sharply struck with frosty, brilliant mint luster and a hint of golden toning. For accuracy, we mention a small obverse planchet flaw at 7 o'clock. A stunning example from this storied mint."

The date 1862 is known with both mintmark "O" and "Oa." Dunigan and Parker^[1] theorize that two mints were operating in the same town simultaneously, accounting for the variations in mintmark and die styles. The Oaxaca mint (or mints) operated 1858-93. Assayer FR is recorded for 1861-64. In the 1860's, the mint was leased to the state of Oaxaca.
