Ponterio sale 155, lot 6264

The first specimen was lot 949 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, December 2009), where it sold for $149.50. The catalog description noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Reales, 1857 Do CP. Durango. Eagle on cactus. Rv. Cap in rays, Resplandor. Abundant frosty silver lustre. Brilliant Uncirculated." The second specimen was lot 6264 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $287.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. 8 Reales, 1857-CP. Nice strike. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED." This date is one of several scarce dates (1855-57) issued during the War of the Reform. The later issues of 1858-64 are more available. The Durango mint opened in 1811 and closed in 1895. The SCWC lists no overdates or varieties.
