Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72683

This specimen was lot 72683 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1857-Zs MO. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-63. Strong mottled toning with impressive underlying luster. NGC Pop 2 with none finer." Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato mint as the largest issuer of eight reales. Assayer MO operated 1855-60. An 1857/5 overdate is reported and awarded a small premium.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
