Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70898

This specimen was lot 70898 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1856-Zs MO. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU Details--Obverse Scratch. A decently preserved example displaying lovely rich mottled patina with a strong strike. Close inspection reveals several small scratches on the obverse accounting the details designation, now slightly subdued. It is interesting to note that the last digit of the date appears to be a weak 6/5 overdate, not indicated on the NGC insert. Further inspection from a specialist is needed to verify that this is in fact the RARE overdate." The SCWC awards the 1856/5 overdate a slight premium. Assayer MO is listed for 1855-65.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
