Mexico 1856-Go PF 8 reales

Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70476

This specimen was lot 70476 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1856/5-Go PF. Guanajuato Mint. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Overdate variety. Tone free with attractive surfaces for the grade. The overdate, which is VERY SCARCE according to Resplandores, is quite clear upon inspection with a loupe." This eight reales is one of a series struck 1825-97 at the Guanajuato mint. This overdate obtains a slight premium over the regular date. Assayer PF is noted for 1848-61.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
